C.V. R. C. E, in association with The Times of India, celebrated International Women's Day 2018
Date - March 08th, 2018

It was International Women's Day (IWD) and C.V. Raman College of Engineering (CVRCE)decided to celebrate it by highlighting gender equality and smashing patriarchal stereotypes in the field of technical education. In association with The Times of India, Bhubaneswar, C.V. Raman College of Engineering celebrated International Women's Day on March 8with a view to 'Empower Women and National Progress'. A host of events were held for female students from several technical colleges across Bhubaneswar.

The competitions were held specifically for female engineering students in Bhubaneswar. These included web designing, coding, welding, technical paper presentation, electronics, business english writing, house wiring and more. The winners were rewarded cash prizes worth `5000, ` 3000 and ` 2000, respectively for first, second and third positions.

The USP of the event was that unlike other Women's Day events which usually focus more on cultural activities, this one chose to highlight skill development in women. The aim of the one-day technical programme was to provide the right platform to girls from different institutions for innovation and exchange of new ideas related to technology and its worldwide usage across different sectors. This would enable them to gain knowledge as well as successfully apply them in various spheres of work and life. The stereotype that girls are not good in technical or mechanical domains was broken by the young women who participated in supposedly male dominated areas like welding. The students were asked to fill up a form wherein they mentioned the technical requirements for the event they were participating in. While some competitions required a solo participant, others were conducted in groups. The institute equipped with necessary equipment and facilities, provided women the platform to showcase their technical prowess and prove that women are not meant simply for 'soft' professions.

The winners were ecstatic to receive their cash prizes, mementos and certificates from renowned personalities amidst media's presence. The chief guest for the occasion was Padmini Panigrahi, academician, who is also an excellent classical dancer, yoga trainer and social worker. Her speech promulgated students to think beyond observing one particular day as Women's Day and finding avenues to fulfil one's dreams despite circumstantial challenges. Shailja Rout was the guest of honour at the event. With her many qualifications and achievements including the prestigious CFA, the financial executive turned entrepreneur voiced her views on how women are already empowered. She cited the example of devotees turning to Goddess Lakshmi, Saraswati and Durga in times of need. "What women need is more opportunity to come across as success ful in nation-building. That should be our focus," Shailja said. She also thanked Sanjib Rout, chairman, C.V.Raman Group of Institutions, for organising such competitions and events throughout the year to bring the best out of students.
